Airbrushing Essential Guide

Airbrushing Essential Guide book by Fred Crellin

A great new 144 page hard cover book by Fred Crellin

Airbrushing is a versatile and exciting art. The technique has been used for some 150 years, and is now finding ever more applications. This beautiful book explains how to use an airbrush. It looks at the fundamentals of how to get started, advises on maintenance of the tool and then gives step-by-step examples of a range of projects. With troubleshooting tips throughout, it enables you to get the most from your airbrush and create beautiful pieces with a professional finish.

Topics covered include:
- Technical illustration
- Watercolour landscapes
- Portraits
- Painting scale models
- Cake decorating
- T-shirts and leather
- Custom painting vehicles

Fred Crellin learnt how to airbrush while studying Industrial Design and Modelling at Wolverhampton University. In subsequent years, he honed his airbrush skills before establishing his own company specializing in custom painting, portraits and cartoons. He qualified as a teacher and runs the Artimagination Airbrush School from his own classroom studio. Fred regularly shows his work at local art galleries and exhibitions.

Jacksons Black Hog Brushes

Jackson’s Black Hog Brushes are on Offer

Not your ordinary hog brushes!

Our most popular oil painting brush is an extra 20% off the already low price until August 3rd, 2014.

Our Black Hog Oil Brushes are truly beautiful. Similar in look to the Black Sable but with slightly stiffer hair and considerably less expensive, these natural hair brushes have the softness, touch, spring and control of a top quality brush. The interlocked bristle is contained in a distinctive copper ferrule with a high quality matt black handle.

Available in round, flat, and filbert shapes in sizes 2 to 12 and two sets.

Julie Caves: “I personally love these brushes. They feel substantial. The bristle has the right mixture of characteristics for oil painting: stiff enough to pick up thick paint and leave brushmarks if desired, springy enough to retain the shape of the brush even with scrubbing and smooth enough for blending. They are so sturdily built that the bristles do not break off in the paint, something I find very irksome. The handles do not peel.”

Customer Reviews:
  • “Excellent very manoverable would recommend it for oil and acrylic”
  • “Good quality at a good price.”
  • “If ever a beauty contest was held for paint brushes, these brushes would win hands down. They far exceeded my expectations. Go and buy these brushes. Not only do they look good they balance superbly in the hand and the quality of the black hog is incredible. What a treat.”
  • “Enjoyed using it – much better than ordinary hog.”
  • “This is lovely brush. The bristles hold the paint well, it has enough strength for expressive brushwork and enough softness for more gentle passages. It actually looks great too. It looks more expensive than it actually is.”
  • “Very nice responsive bristle brush”
  • “I have bought some previously and they really are excellent. They outclass all other brands in that price bracket and some higher priced ones.”

City Lit Fine Art Course Exhibition
17-22 July 2014
Preview: Thursday 17 July 6-9pm

Students from the City Lit Fine Art Course present their end of course show at Espacio Gallery.

The dynamic and often experimental work is a result of two years study by students from contrasting and diverse backgrounds and artistic interests. There is no unifying or house style to this show, it is based upon exploration and discovery and no student is prevented from working in their chosen genre. Interests range from small sculpture inspired by Brutalist Architecture to personal dreamscapes, visions and myths of masculinity and the very process of creating artwork on an intuitive basis.

Students have chosen work because it represents an exciting stage in their development and this informs the lively spirit of the show.

City Lit is an inclusive Adult College in Central London, where students are encouraged to develop their aspirations and celebrate their difference.

Rendr No Show Thru Paper and Shin Han Touch Twin Markers
Great together!

Rendr No Show Thru Paper

Crescent : RENDR 8.5in x 11in Hardback Sketchbook White Paper 48sh no show through

Rendr No Show Thru Paper allows you to use both sides of your sketchbook paper. Eliminating the need to tear out the next page, and removing the limitation upon what type of media you use in your sketches. No Show Thru paper is available in a roll, pad or hardback sketchbook.

ShinHan’s Twin Touch Marker Pens

Shin Han Touch Twin Marker Pen

ShinHan’s Twin Touch Marker Pens are ideal for a diverse range of uses, from animation, illustration, architectural renderings, and interior design sketches. With a unique fine point nib on one side and a broad chisel nib on the other, the Twin Touch Marker offers artists and designers a greater range of line thicknesses than ever before. The delivery of ink flow can be perfectly controlled to allow precision drawing. The alcohol based ink will write or draw on a wide variety of different surfaces including paper, card, glass, wood and plastic (acetate). The ergonomically designed rectangular body resists rolling on work surfaces and provides a perfect grip that avoids smudges and smears. A specially designed safety cap stacks neatly and prevents damage to the nibs. The new Twin Touch marker contains an alcohol-based ink that doesn’t dissolve printed ink toner, allowing for odourless, vividly colored artwork on printed materials. Colours dry waterproof. They are a great drawing material that has the capacity to layer and blend into one another in a way that bridges the gap between drawing and painting.

Because alcohol based ink is fast drying, our tip is to act fast if you wish to manipulate the appearance of your colours.

Varying the tonal value: You can make a colour appear darker by repeatedly going over the same area with that colour. If you want to make the area appear as light as possible in a certain colour then we suggest you apply it as lightly as possible.

Colour Mixing: There is a degree of transparency in the colours of the Shin Han Twin Touch Marker Pen range, so if you layer one colour over a different colour, you get to see the resulting mix of the 2 drawn colours.

Soft blending: You can apply two contrasting colours on to a surface and if done quickly enough, the colours will bleed into one another to create a softer transition. If time was allowed between the applications of the 2 contrasting colours, a hard edge would appear between the 2 colours on your work.

Manet Soft Pastel Offer

Manet Soft Pastels

The smooth finish of these handmade pastels and the unique colour formulations result in a truly lovely soft pastel. Gently hand-rolled and air-dried, each stick is as much an organic sculpture as it is a tool. Look closely at a stick and you may see the fine lines and fingerprints imparted by the pastels creator. Each pastel takes on the tapered shape of the maker’s palms.

The use of only pure pigments in a cycle of related hues instead of adding black or white creates vibrant colours not muddied by the blending common in conventional pastels. The pastels use as little binder as possible making them very soft and smooth.

Manet Handmade Soft Pastels

All the feedback I have received about these pastels has been positive about their softness and colour intensity. These 16x35mm size soft pastels have 112 colours in the range plus 12 sets.

Duality
24-29 July 2014
Preview: Thursday 24 July 6-9pm

Performances at Preview:
Bryan Green 8pm
Luciana Duailibe 8:15pm

Duality is the condition of being two, of having two parts usually with opposite meanings, two splitting parts stemming from one unit like the existence of good and evil in human nature.

Duality is present in the enigmatic nature of mankind – up and down, peace and war, love and hate, etc. The idea of opposites (Yin-Yang, the union and harmony of opposites) has existed in both Eastern and Western philosophy since ancient times.

Duality has been farther examined, it has technical meanings in geometry as well as physics, and it can be challenging. However, for this show we aim to get into a playful, free-spirited investigation using art and a great dose of audacity!

Exhibiting artists:
Lawrence Mathias, Sinclair Watkins, Justine Roland Cal, Silvio Severino, Carla Fleck, Liz Derbyshire, Kevin Derbyshire, Les Lismore, Mark Nelson, Liz Kent, Carl Meek, Niki Hare, Marina Lewis, TAO, Pascale Pollier, Bryan Green, Naomi Davis, Terry Filisetti Yoshinaga, Sharon Sondh, Dong Li-Blackwell, Swaroop Biswas, Nicholas Peart, Gaelle Garbani

Painting Skies and Seascapes

A new 112-page paperback book by Peter D. Rush

Painting Skies and Seascapes book by Peter D. Rush

The sea and sky have captured the attention of artists for centuries. Their energy and drama, or their tranquility and beauty, can be portrayed powerfully and magnificently in a painting. This encouraging and user-friendly book gives practical advice on how to set about sea and sky painting, and explains what to look for in capturing space and movement, colour and light.
Peter Rush has asked four guest artists to join him in this book to write the chapters that cover mediums that aren’t his main mediums: Ros Harvey, Cathy Veale, Andrew Lievesley, and Ken Bushe.

- Guide to the tools, materials and techniques
- Practical instruction on coloured inks, acrylics, pastels, watercolours and oils
- Step-by-step painting sequences
- Inspiration and ideas from leading artists

Peter Rush has always been drawn to the sky and sea. After many years of working as an illustrator for the BBC’s Jackanory, he now specializes in painting skies and seas, often en plein air or from the relative comfort of his camper van.

Image at the top is from Chapter 4, painted by Cathy Veale who is the artist who has written the watercolour chapter of this book.

Schmincke Mussini Oil Mediums

New at Jackson’s!

Schmincke Mussini Oil Mediums

A perfect compliment to the Schmincke Mussini resin oil colours, the Mussini Oil Mediums work beautifully with all makes of oil colours.
Choose from Mussini Oil Medium 1, 2 or 3 depending on what effect you are looking for in your painting.

Schmincke Mussini Medium 1
Thinning Oil Medium

Schmincke Mussini Medium 1 is a thinning medium. This medium is ideal for use on lean/low-fat paintings. It is recommended for use when creating thin grounds. This medium is made from safflower oil dissolved in mineral spirits, which retains the film integrity and lustre of the oil colour. The product thins paint with minimal effect on drying time and gloss.
Contains: Safflower oil, natural/synthetic resin, and mineral spirit

Schmincke Mussini Medium 2
Slow Dry Oil Medium

Schmincke Mussini Oil Medium 2 is a slow drying medium. It reduces the drying speed of the paint and allows for an extended working period. This oil rich medium is suitable for wet-in-wet painting and blending techniques. The high content of oil and resin in the medium improves the gloss of the paint. It dries to a smooth elastic film.
Contains: Sunflower oil, stand oil, mineral spirit, ketone resin

Schmincke Mussini Medium 3
Fast Dry Gloss Medium

Schmincke Mussini Oil Medium 3 is a fast drying medium. The volatile solvent and siccatives in this medium cause rapid drying. The resin rich content increases gloss, depth effect and refraction and makes the colour layers more resistant.
Use sparingly to prevent excessive gloss. Close immediately after use.
Contains: Ketone and alkyd resin, mineral spirit, siccative.

New DVDs at Jackson’s!

DVD : A Journey in Watercolour : Herman Pekel

A Journey in Watercolour
by Herman Pekel
108-minute long DVD

Herman is a painter of light who works outdoors whenever possible. He encourages us to identify a focal point, to exaggerate the light effect and the shadows and, if necessary, borrow elements from the surrounding area to improve the composition. In this film he selects street views in his home town of Melbourne before journeying to the UK and finding some wonderful subjects in the countryside in and around Faversham in Kent.

Wade's Watercolour Wisdom DVD

Wade’s Watercolour Wisdom
by Robert Wade
85-minute long DVD

Filmed in his studio in Melbourne, Bob takes us through a series of exercises in watercolour, encouraging us to experiment with the medium and understand what watercolour can do. Using a variety of techniques such as wet into wet and dry brush, he begins by producing abstract shapes, progresses through to finding form and shape in abstraction and finally to finished paintings. A lot of fun and enjoyment and plenty to learn.

Illustrator H Locke reviews Winsor & Newton Water Colour Markers

We have just received the first Winsor & Newton Watercolour Markers!

H Locke was kind enough to do a review of them to let us know what they are like for illustration work.
Below are highlights of the review. You can read the full review on H Locke’s website.

Illustrator H Locke reviews Winsor & Newton Water Colour Markers

“Firstly, it’s nice that they have the feel and shape of a promarker style pen – something chunky to work with. They also have the traditional double-tip for flexibility and effect.”

H Locke winsor and newton markers

“As you can see, there are some vibrant and quite dark colours coming out here. The nice thing about this for any marker fans out there is that these can clearly be used purely as markers without water/blending – and have neither the nasty smell nor tendency to soak through All The Paper that promarkers and other alcohol-based pens have.”

H Locke winsor and newton markers

“As you can see, the wash effect works rather well, whilst keeping that dark edge in the original marker work. This is something you definitely can’t achieve with ‘normal’ watercolours.”

H Locke winsor and newton markers

“There’s something about the effect that I was able to achieve on these chimney pots which makes me very excited about these pens. I don’t know if it’s because I have to be braver working with this much colour? – I can’t hide behind the gradual build up of colour that I can with a traditional watercolour palette and brush? But I seem to have gone all Quentin Blake on these – something in these pens has changed my whole approach, even in the Micron drawings, freeing up the work, spilling the colour over the lines and capturing much more of the lights and shadows than I otherwise would.”

H Locke winsor and newton markers

Close-up of small detail of chinmey pots
on rooftop in an illustration by H Locke

“I have to say W&N, I think you’ve got a convert. Love the markers and will be adding more colours to my collection soon.”

Read the full review on H Locke’s website.

Editor’s note:
H Locke has let me know that her use of “permanent” (in the full review) was not about the lightfastness of the markers but was instead saying they are not waterproof.

Fantasy Landscapes in Watercolour

The new 48-page paperback book by Stuart Littlejohn has 80 illustration.

Fantasy Landscapes in Watercolour book by Stuart Littlejohn

Littlejohn’s accessible and easy-to-follow text will guide you through the materials and equipment you need to get started with fantasy painting. Littlejohn’s shows the reader where to find inspiration, how to develop your ideas, and how to add mood, drama and atmosphere and a little bit of magic to create your own fantasy worlds.

The three stunning, step-by-step projects, filled with numerous invaluable tips and techniques, will allow you to produce vibrant and colourful paintings of your own. This useful book will be appreciated by beginners, experienced artists and anyone interested in fantasy art.

Review by Artbookreview.net
“This introduction to fantasy art has the great benefit of simplicity on its side. Stuart Littlejohn has taken what can be a huge subject and distilled it into three very thoroughly illustrated demonstrations that will set you firmly on the right road if you’re just starting out. If you need a little help with the practicalities of the medium, there’s a useful introduction to materials, colour and composition at the beginning, but even more experienced artists will find that the real meat is in the demonstrations.”
