Wolf at the door
18-23 December 2014
Private View: Thursday 18 December 6-9pm

Participating artists: James Haggas, Chrissy Mclaughlan, Irina Tsynbal, Mark Walter.

The four artists in this exhibition reflect the complexity of our world through the different approaches to their work. Ranging from the artist’s observations in the everyday, to the intimacy of imagined spaces developed in the studio. Whether conjured from the intricacies of human passions and patterns or from the beauty found in unexpected places, the group lace together history, freedom and inquiry with a desire to construct their new narratives.

The show includes painting, drawing, and sculpture, and is a celebration of the artists’ compulsion to continue making art despite the ever present wolf at the door.

James Haggas is engaged with the process of discovery and learning. His art practice is stimulated by the constantly changing kaleidoscope of the everyday world around him. His curiosity with the ephemeral presents the artist with infinite possibilities to create thought provoking and original work.

In her paintings, Christine Mclaughlan is concerned with the construction of imagined space and narrative through the manipulation of paint. Her textured and layered surfaces frequently hint at interior landscapes or natural environments, where the viewer is invited to engage with visual fragments to locate the tangible: familiar and at times disconcerting.

Irina Tsynbal explores the concept of the Seven Deadly Sins. In her vibrant portraits of beautiful women, the artist skillfully manipulates the characters and expressions of her models with the use of tape and perspex, enhanced by a multi-faceted system of geometrical shapes and colour combinations.

Mark Walter is interested in creating new narratives from found objects, broken and discarded in the environment. His enquiry is focused on the origins, materiality and presence of these objects, that have been devalued by society, and to re-purpose them into imaginative and compelling new work.
