To keep you artists going during the cold winter Strathmore and Jackson’s Art Supplies teamed up to offer £1000 worth of vouchers as prizes to artists working in any media and of all abilities. The work needed to have the theme of ‘The Wonders of Winter’ and be on any Strathmore paper.
We received a wide variety of artwork on the theme of Winter and were impressed by the overall quality of the work. We hope all the participants enjoyed using Strathmore papers and had fun seeing the work of the other artists who participated.

“Colour Pencils drawing on 500 SERIES Charcoal, Blue Gray, 64lb of my cat Laila, then nine months old discovering how fun snow can be. The picture was taken in December 2010 after a heavy snowfall; I was throwing soft snowballs and she was literally trying to catch them, thus the title Cat-ching snowballs.”
-France Bauduin SOFA
France has been drawing her cats & kittens using coloured pencils for 12 years. She is a full member of the Society of Feline Artists (SOFA) and also a member of the UK Coloured Pencil Society (UKCPS). You can find more of her drawings on her website.
She is not sure yet what she will get with her prize winnings but is planning to experiment with new kinds of Strathmore Papers and brands of Colour Pencils like Caran d’Ache Luminance, Derwent Inktense & Albrecht Durer Watercolour.
“Many thanks for creating this ‘Wonders of Winter’ competition and your generous prizes. If not for this ‘winter theme’ I don’t think I would have ever thought of drawing my cat Laila playing in the snow and come up with ‘Cat-ching Snowballs’.” -France Bauduin
“Prismacolor Premier coloured pencil on Strathmore 400 series Bristol Smooth 297x210mm Zest it solvent used for the blending of the sky and snow in the background. Overlaid with A4 acetate with acrylic paint depicting falling snow.”
-Judith Selcuk
With her prize Judith plans to buy Faber Castell Polychromos pencils as she uses coloured pencils every day in her work and the Strathmore products she will choose include Illustration board, Bristol board and visual journals in two sizes “just because I can :)”
Judith Selcuk is a professional artist specialising in colour pencil and gouache painting. She paints private commissions, runs workshops and art clubs and always has something personal on the go, too.
“Watercolour depicting the fantastic winter sky at sunset, in the foreground a silhouetted naked oak. Paper used: 500 series imperial watercolour coldpress 300 gsm. Limited palette used. Wet on wet for sunset, outline sketch for oak tree, and as painting a silhouette I dared to use lamp black, probably broke all the rules with that… but I think it worked.”
-Ann Harris
Ann Harris has just signed with Prodigar Ltd, a new artist agency. She hasn’t yet decided everything she will choose with her winnings but will start with a watercolour book, a carry case and some A3 Strathmore watercolour paper.
